• Obituary. "He Remembered When The Roads Were 'Hand-made' "

A man whose first job is difficult to conceive in this modern age - sitting by the roadside, breaking stones by hand for new road surfaces - died at his son's home at Sandy Lane, Dereham on Thursday week at the age of 87. He was Mr Thomas Freezer, who was born at Gressenhall and spent all his life in the Dereham district.

Mr Freezer was a familiar figure at local markets and sales until his last illness kept him to his bed for 18 months. Pushing his little hand barrow, he used to buy and sell rabbit skins and small articles of furniture and clothing. He lived for most of his life at Scarning, where he worked as a roadman near the gravel pit.
