Robert Lincoln Young was a very successful farmer. He had several farms and co-signed on several others. When the depression came, he lost all. All Robert Lincoln Young had left was a gold watch and a gold headed cane. His grandson, Robert Louis Young remembered his grandfather quite well as a real gentleman who went in town every day to be shaved but never quite recouped his fortune.
Note: By working hard, his son, Harold Ewart Young and Harold's wife Sara retrieved the homestead. Besides both working hard, Sara also played the stock market and commodities market and managed the finances. She did very well in the markets which was part of how the homestead was retrieved.
Robert Young was 59, born in Ohio, a farmer whose father was born in Germany and his mother was born in New Jersey, per the 1880 Federal Census. Living in his household in 1880, was his wife Mary F. Young, age 54, born in Ohio, keeping house, her father was born in New Jersey, and her mother was born in England. Living in their household was his son Robert L. Young, age 16, a farmer, and born in Illinois. His parents were listed as both born in Ohio. Also, living there was a nephew Albert Young, single, age 22, born in Ohio and working as a farm hand. Albert's parents were both born in Ohio. Emma B. Andrew was living in the household, 18 years old, single, born in Illinois, attending school, and her father was born in Ohio and her mother was in Virginia.
When her grandparents died, Margaret Young Rice and her husband Rory Rice bought her Grandparents Young's farm, all in tact with the pictures on the wall, the furniture, the records, dishes, etc. Many picures and records about the Youngs and about Hannah and Edward Johnston and their children were in this house.
