Surgeon General
Research Notes:
At the time she married Huntly George Gordon, she (Julia) was living with her family (we know that Thomas Grantham was stationed in Ceylon at the time). The marriage seems to have been with her father's approval. However, as mentioned below, Huntly George Gordon was illegitimate (however,he was recognized by his father and family). Thomas Grantham arrived in Ceylon in April 1845 and as stated below Julia and Huntly married in Feb. 1847. Huntly was assistant surgeon to the 95th Foot at the time, however, they may not have known his background. We are in the process of learning about Huntly's mother (Dorothea Christina Thomas). She was born in the West Indies and there is a distinct possibility that she was mixed race (Huntly himself being dark). There is the possibility that Julia Stanley later discovered the true situation and that was the cause of the marriage breakdown. In any case, I'll keep you posted when we find out the identity of Dorothea Christina Thomas.
