William Cabell FLOURNOY
User ID: P00051913. General Notes: William Cabell Flournoy (Jody's 2nd Great Grandfather), born December 3 1809; educated at Hampden Sidney College. He was a man of generous and noble impulses, of a high order of intellect and rare powers of eloquence. His unflinching fidelity to his friends, and to every cause that he espoused, was proverbial. He was at different times a member of the Virginia legislature, and occupied a position of commanding influence in that body. He was for many years the prosecuting attorney in Prince Edward, where he had a most unrivaled influence and popularity. He was frequently solicited to become a candidate for the United States Congress, but as frequently declined. He was always sent to the national nominating conventions of his party, and wielded large influence in those bodies for good. He was as strong a Democrat as his brother, the Hon. Thomas S. Flournoy, was a Whig. He died at his residence, at Prince Edward C. H., March 3 1861. A talented and distinguished lawyer, an attractive, benevolent, and honorable man, his many virtues will long be remembered by all classes of society with all that warm affection which they so justly inspired. He was married, June 26, 1834, at Haymarket, Prince Edward County, by Rev. George Baxter, D. D., to Martha Watkins Venable (who is still living), daughter of William L. Venable, of Prince Edward. Among her emigrant ancestors were: Venable, Davis, Woodson, Michaux, Nantz, Hughes, Watkins, etc. He and Martha were the parents of ten children. William married Martha Watkins VENABLE, daughter of William Lewis VENABLE and Francis Watkins NANTZ, on 26 Jun 1834 in Prince Edward, VA. (Martha Watkins VENABLE was born on 5 Jun 1816 in Prince Edward, Virginia, USA, "Haymarket" and died in 1905 in Farmville, PR. Edw. Co., VA.) |
