Mrs. Hattie Negus Dies at the St. Francis Hospital, Santa Barbara, Tuesday Morning ________________________
Mrs. Hattie Negus, a pioneer resident of this city, passed peacefully away at the Saint Francis Hospital Tuesday morning, March 23rd, at 10:30 o'clock at the age of fifty-eight years, eight months and seven days. Although Mrs. Negus had been in poor health and on the decline for some time, her sudden demise was regarded as a surprise to her friends. Deceased was born in Burroha, Michigan, on July 16, 1850 and came to California when a girl, locating first at Hollister and later coming to Lompoc, where she resided for over thirty years and enjoyed the love and esteem of a community who valued her for what she was-a true and pure woman. Mrs. Negus, whose maiden name was Hattie Johnson, was married March 13, 1872, to E. W. Negus, who passed to the Great Beyond many years ago. To this happy union four sons and two daughters were born all of whom survive her and are living lives of usefulness. They are: Paul, Will, Walter and A. J. Negus, of this place, Mrs. Asa Fitspatrick, of Oakdale, this state, and Grace Negus, who devoted all her time and attention to the care of her mother who for over ten years had been an invalid; for the past four years confined to her bed, unable to assist herself in any way, but the love and devotion of her children kept her from brooding over her troubles and she was ever ready with a word of good cheer and a smile and her many words of kindness will long live in the memory of her friends. The remains were brought from Santa Barbara Wednesday by Will and Miss Grace Negus and the funeral services were held this afternoon from the Methodist Episcopal Church, which had claimed Mrs. Negus as an honored member for over fifteen years. Rev. G. W. Marine conducted the services. Many friends were present at the funeral and with the sorrowing relatives followed the remains to the cemetery where interment was made. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family in their sorrow.
